village
Turin's Olympic Village can house up to 2,500 athletes and spans more than 100,000 square meters. At the center of the complex is the restored Mercati Generali, or General Markets building, which dates back to 1934. The village was designed following bio-architectural methods, with photovoltaic cells and panels, a district heating network and air solar systems for ventilation. A 60 percent savings is expected on the energy consumed and pollutants emitted. After the Olympics, the village will become city property. Some parts of it will be used for housing and others will be used for research and high-tech services.
