The most exciting mission for Orion will be when it will take humans to the moon scheduled before 2020. One of the biggest hurdles facing scientists who are designing Orion is developing a heat-shield coating. Scientists are attempting to reproduce the materials used in the Apollo program of the 1960s but have found it difficult without the help of its inventors.
Due to its larger size, Orion's heat shield must withstand a 30 percent temperature increase over what the Apollo capsule experienced.
