In the front row of this computer class is Joseph Cooper, 17-year-old from Manteca, Calif., who's animating a 3D character of his own design with the program Maya for a homespun computer game. He's attending the three-week program called iD Gaming Academy on the Stanford Campus. "I like the computer programming side of games, but this gives me a taste of the art side," said Cooper, who hopes to go to Cal Poly next year.

Cooper will also compete next week at UCLA against Johnathan "Fatal1ty" Wendel, a pro gamer, at the game of Quake. He is among the best students from iD Gaming Academy camps on various campuses to get the chance to play against Wendel to win a $3,000 gaming system, according to iD Tech.
