At the Fallon Naval Air Station in Fallon, Nev., two F-18 Hornets--the mainstay of the Navy's fighter fleet--approach the airfield for landing. Before they can land, the pilots will do a 180- degree turn past the control tower, fly far beyond the runway, do another 180-degree turn, and then land. The Navy base is the service's major center for training pilots for combat operations from aircraft carriers.
