Gouge
NASA discovered a 3.5-inch gouge out of the space shuttle Endeavour's heat shield and are deciding whether to send astronauts on a space walk to repair it. Teacher-turned-astronaut Barbara Morgan operated a 100-foot robotic arm Sunday to gather more information for scientists.

The ceramic heat-resistant tiles and carbon panels protect the shuttle from 2,000-degree Fahrenheit temperatures which occur during the ship's reentry into Earth's atmosphere.
