Cables
In the Caltrans office that's administering the construction of the bridge's new eastern side, a model showcases the way the agency will use some 17,400 5-millimeter wires. The wires will be anchored in what is called a splay chamber on the eastern side of the SAS section, and they will "splay out and spread force across a wide area to give it strong footing" that will provide structural stability in an earthquake, said Bart Ney, public information officer for the bridge construction project.
