Michael Coates, 45, is an Australian pilot whose short-wing Pipistrel Virus won the most prizes at the NASA PAV challenge. The Pipistrel won the $100,000 Vantage prize for best all around plane, based on handling, speed and other factors; $25,000 for shortest takeoff; and $25,000 for most fuel efficient plane. Coates called the plane the "Prius of airplanes" because it can go as fast as 170 mph and get 50 miles to the gallon.
