A Yak-3, or a Russian World War II fighter jet, astride the runway at the members-only airfield of the Cafe Foundation, a nonprofit group of flight-test engineers that was hosting the NASA-sponsored PAV Challenge. Cafe members are restoring the Yak-3 with scrap parts collected from around the world. The plane was on display and flown Saturday at the challenge.
The EAA, or Experimental Aviation Association, first funded Cafe for conducting tests to validate claims of kit plane manufacturers. The Cafe Foundation was contracted by NASA to conduct the PAV challenge.
