Mike Fenn, a Cafe board member, explains some of the technology that is used to monitor and measure an airplane's wind speed and sound footprint, all transmitted wirelessly from the plane's onboard PC.
Cafe Foundation gear like wind cuffs on the plane's wings measure the efficiency of the planes in the race. The contestants had to race a 380-mile closed-circuit course and after landing were measured on speed and fuel efficiency to a 100th of a pound.
