While not as powerful as the D3, the D300 packs many of the same features including a pair of "Live View" modes for framing with the LCD instead of the optical viewfinder, Nikon's new Expeed image processor, the same AF system for scene recognition and AF tracking, and a virtual horizon indicator.
Nikon says the D300 will be available in November with a price tag of around $1,799.95.
