The United Kingdom Infra-Red Telescope is the world's largest telescope dedicated solely to infrared astronomy, and is operated by the Joint Astronomy Center. In May, a sky survey by UKIRT discovered the coolest (in temperature, not in hipness) brown dwarf star that's only about 15 to 30 times the mass of Jupiter. UKIRT's deep sky survey is expected to be complete by 2012.
