Straw-stuffed walls

Building supply companies and distributors displayed and demonstrated their eco-friendly products at West Coast Green, a conference held in San Francisco Wednesday through Saturday.

The three little pigs are back. You can now get walls stuffed with straw for better insulation, according to Vox Design Group, which designs green homes. You have to seal the straw walls up very carefully to avoid moisture, but the concept makes a great conversation piece. The company also makes walls out of integrated concrete forms, which involves pouring concrete over a Styrofoam shape. The company prefers to use concrete with a lot of fly ash, which is waste product from smokestacks.
