TechRepublic user mjd420nova clarifies the process: "First, make up a map of all the servers, what hooks to them through what switch, and so on. That will help you to identify each connection and each corresponding cable. In the process of doing this, you can label each cable. Once that is done, it is feasible to disconnect everything and get the cables laid out and routed in an orderly manner."

TR readers jneilson and brian.ross add these timely insights: Use rat poison if you suspect that cords might be getting too much attention from the rodent world. Better yet, hire a cabling specialist to think about the cords and the rats.
