Hoses partially fill the Sunrise balloon with helium in preparation for launch. Room is left for the air inside the balloon to expand as the atmosphere thins during the balloon's ascent. The balloon is larger than a Boeing 747 jumbo jet.
The balloon can carry a 39-inch solar telescope and carries a maximum load of 6,000 pounds.
