The telescope will be able to show features on the solar surface as small as 30 about 19 miles across. This is more than double the resolution achieved by any other instrument to date, according to NCAR.
Shown here is a composite image of about 200 photographs of the sun's surface taken from the balloon's telescope. The Sunrise project hopes to study the sun's magnetic field structures, which can cause electromagnetic storms that could have an impact on Earth's climate.
