London Underground maps
The MOVE car navigation system being developed at Carnegie Mellon University is based on the concept that was applied to the the complicated London Underground map in 1933. On the left is the 1926 subway map by Fred Stingemore. On the right is the one used today, derived from Harry Beck's 1933 design. Beck pioneered the idea of using only straight lines and not drawing the distances between stops to actual scale, on the assumption that they could be more easily read that way.
