The new Three Gorges Dam on China's Yangtze River is a massive construction project that's nearing completion in the next year or two, but the many controversies surrounding the dam will likely continue for some time beyond that. Chief among the complaints raised by critics: architectural and other cultural treasures submerged as the reservoir filled in, dislocation and inadequate compensation of tens of thousands of poor residents, and ecological damage ranging from erosion to water pollution.
