A closeup of a cartridge in the vacuum chamber. The machine evacuates all the air in the chamber, including the air in the sponge contained inside the cartridge. That allows the ink to be injected into the cartridge without any air bubbles, which can cause a printer to lock up. The process takes about 30 to 60 seconds per cartridge, but each is allowed to settle for at least a day for the pressure to stabilize on the inside.
