This is a newfangled gunship for the 21st century, the Advanced Tactical Laser . A kid brother to Boeing's 747-based Airborne Laser, which is intended to hit ballistic missiles, the C-130H-based ATL is supposed to go after ground targets. When work is completed, the ATL will fire a high-energy chemical laser from the ball turret in the belly of the fuselage. In-flight firing tests are expected to take place sometime in 2008.

- IIRC, before the end of the Vietnam fiasco the C-130 gunships were flying although they weren't nearly as potent or as accurate as what flies today. This would have been in the '68 period. The old AC-... (Read the rest)
