This is a newfangled gunship for the 21st century, the Advanced Tactical Laser. A kid brother to Boeing's 747-based Airborne Laser, which is intended to hit ballistic missiles, the C-130H-based ATL is supposed to go after ground targets. When work is completed, the ATL will fire a high-energy chemical laser from the ball turret in the belly of the fuselage. In-flight firing tests are expected to take place sometime in 2008.
