The first U.S. response to the Soviet launches of Sputnik 1 and Sputnik 2 ended in a fiery blaze on the launchpad in December 1957. The U.S. Navy had pushed up the launch date of a Vanguard satellite apparently a little too much in reaction to the successful Sputnik missions.
