Scientist James Van Allen designed one of the three experiments aboard Explorer 1, a Geiger counter that clicked when it detected cosmic radiation. This led to Van Allen's discovery of a donut-shaped radiation belt that wraps around Earth--now called the Van Allen radiation belt.
