Nike Hercules missiles could carry either conventional or nuclear warheads. The nuclear-tipped missiles were distinguished by these red fail-safe systems, which were designed to ensure that the missile could not detonate unless it had reached at least 10,000 feet of altitude, something that was considered important, given that the missiles were being launched so close to U.S. cities.
