Fort Knox

After several days in Kentucky for Road Trip 2008, CNET News.com reporter Daniel Terdiman found no shortage of science- and technology-related sites well worth sharing.

This, for example, is the United States Bullion Depository, usually known as Fort Knox. It is the country's major store of gold bullion, and is said to hold 147.3 million ounces of the precious metal. It opened in 1937, and has had as much as 649.6 million ounces of gold (at the start of America's participation in World War II).

The depository is located at Fort Knox, an Army installation just south of Louisville. It is entirely off-limits to the public, and it is not supposed to be possible to take photographs of it. However, by stopping briefly along the side of the highway that borders Fort Knox, it was possible to snap this image.
