New levee wall--clay

The Army Corps of Engineers is building a new levee along Lakeshore Drive in New Orleans, which borders Lake Pontchartrain, the source of much of the storm surge that so badly flooded the city during Hurricane Katrina. The surge reached more than 20 feet high in some places.

One thing the Corps of Engineers is trying to do to strengthen levees to keep them from breaching during future hurricanes is to plant grasses on them. That's because, the theory goes, the grasses will help the walls keep from eroding on the opposite side from the lake if flood waters overtop it, something that happened during Katrina. In addition, the Corps is using a very thick clay to help with this process. Here, the wall hasn't yet been seeded with the new grass, but will be eventually.
