Old containment gate

Another hurricane protection system that remains in place in New Orleans from the pre-Katrina days is this containment gate. In normal conditions, it stays open, allowing traffic to go in and out of the neighborhoods behind it. But in the case of a hurricane, the gate can be swung closed, providing additional protection to the areas on the other side.

There is also a levee across the street and behind the camera that is designed to hold back storm surge from Lake Pontchartrain.
