Like other UAVs in service with the U.S. military, the Shadow keeps watch from the skies on terrain below, sending video images back to a ground station. Those images, in turn, can be used for surveillance and reconnaissance, or for target acquisition.
Earlier this year, the Shadow was one of a half-dozen UAVs considered worthy of being put on display at the Smithsonian Institution. It can fly at about 100 miles per hour and reach an altitude of about 19,000 feet.
