In this photo from June 2008, a beam pipe is being installed in the ATLAS detector, the final section of the LHC. The ATLAS detector is the world's largest general-purpose particle detector, measuring 148 feet long, 82 feet high, and 82 feet wide. It weighs 7,716 tons and consists of 100 million sensors that measure particles produced in proton-proton collisions.
