One of the British Library team dons a pair of periscope glasses from the 1920s. They allow the wearer to read a newspaper or book without having to look down, by using small mirrors in the frames.

I think air-tight seal was meant rather than vacuum (which also requires an air-tight seal to work) (Read the rest)
