The scientists' report states the unusually large sand waves are probably a result of the massive amount of water pushed through the very narrow strait of the Golden Gate. Approximately 528 billion gallons of water rushes through the strait every six hours. The current is strong enough to drag large amounts of sediment through the strait but then immediately dumps it as the channel widens.
