286 Microprocessor
The Intel 286, originally known as the 80286, was the first Intel processor that could run all the software written for its predecessor. Within 6 years of its release, an estimated 15 million 286-based personal computers were installed around the world, according to Intel.

To avoid overdependence on Intel as its sole source of chips, IBM demanded in the early 1980s that Intel find it a second supplier. In 1982, Intel and AMD signed a technology exchange agreement making AMD a second supplier, giving AMD access to Intel's so-called second-generation 286 chip technology. And so was the beginning of what would become a long and letigious relationship between the two chipmakers.
