In 1985, the chip giant launched its next-generation 386 chip, a significant leap from its previous architecture, the 286.

The 386 microprocessor featured 275,000 transistors--more than 100 times as many as the original 4004. It was a 32-bit chip and was capable of "multitasking," meaning it could run multiple programs at the same time.
