Called the Mt. Everest of off-road racing, the Dakar Rally, which begins in Lisbon, Portugal, and crosses African deserts, is car tech's toughest challenge. In fact, one motorcycle rider was killed and another, a top contender, sustained serious injuries in separate crashes.
The 16-day, 15-stage event starts out peacefully enough in Lisbon. But racers must drive through Portugal and Spain, then cross the Mediterranean and drive through often roadless terrain over four African countries to the finish in Dakar, Senegal, on Sunday.
