Gene Cernan, who flew on Apollo 17. He was the last man on the moon, landing there on December 14, 1972. In the Shadow of the Moon filmmaker David Sington said he felt the documentary was important especially because it might inspire the next generation to go to the moon.
Speaking to a Sundance audience, Sington also said that the film "celebrates a great human and American achievement" that took place in just eight short years. "If that can be done in the '60s, there's no reason we can't get on top of all the problems we have right now."
