The BioSub was partially powered by Godson himself, who rode a generator bicycle inside the sub. Godson grew algae that released the oxygen he breathed. He also obtained fresh water and processed his own waste.
The experiment, which Godson devised to study the physical and psychological effects of underwater isolation, was mostly funded by his winnings in Australian Geographic,'s "Live Your Dream" Wildest Adventure Competition.
"It's such an unusual adventure compared to many of the adventures we sponsor," the nature magazine's editorial director, Dee Nolan, said in a statement.
