Lite Machines
This helicopter-esque unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), on display at this year's Navy Opportunity Forum in Arlington, Va., can be launched by hand or from a tube. The three-pound, virtually silent device is designed to be used to deploy sensors that can detect potential hazards down below while allowing manned aircraft to remain at a safe distance away.

Manufactured by West Lafayette, Ind.-based Lite Machines, the battery-powered prototype UAV is still undergoing field testing. It is expected to cost less than $2,000 if it makes it to market.
