This UAV system, designed by Woburn, Mass.-based Kazak Composites, is intended for a specific purpose: dropping sonobuoys and other types of sensors from more than 1,000 feet, which is currently impossible to achieve in an accurate fashion.

The idea is to keep manned aircraft like the P-3 Orion and the new P-8 Poseidon out of harm's way. The GPS-controlled device is capable of gliding up to 26 nautical miles away when it is deployed from an aircraft at 30,000 feet. On display at this year's Navy Opportunity Forum, it is intended for antisubmarine warfare, homeland security and drug interdiction missions and is expected to go into commercial production in mid-2009.
