Lycee Niepce Eco-marathon vehicle
In Nascar and Formula 1 races, the goal is speed. In the Shell Eco-marathon, drivers have something a little more frugal in mind: good gas mileage. Or better said, good fuel economy, because the series of eco-races, which have long focused on internal combustion systems, also includes categories for alternative fuels. In all, the racers can use fuel ranging from gasoline and diesel to solar, electric, hydrogen and biomass.

Starting Friday, the three-day European edition of the Eco-marathon will feature more than 200 entries from high schools and universities in 20 countries, vying for top honors at the Nogaro Racing Circuit in France. The event has strong backing from the European Commission, represented in this photo by Janez Potocnik, the commissioner for science and research (second from right).

The vehicle here, No. 8, is from the Lycee Niepce in Bourgogne, France.
