The Stanford University racing team shows off its robot car, Junior, to DARPA representatives on Thursday in the first test round to enter the third edition of the DARPA Grand Challenge autonomous vehicles competition. The competition, known as the Urban Challenge, is scheduled for November.

Junior's position and orientation are estimated by a GPS. Its position and path on the road are both optimized in real-time with the help of several active sensors. A laser detects and tracks objects around the vehicle
