Joint Light Tactical Vehicles

For all the benefits of the MRAP vehicles, they're not appropriate for all situations. They've been criticized for faults ranging from their weight to limited sight lines.

The Army has been looking at prototypes of what it calls Joint Light Tactical Vehicles, or JLTVs, which would essentially be replacements for Humvees. Pictured here is an 9-ton vehicle built by International Military and Government--that compares with 16 tons for the four-wheel version of the Cougar.

All the JLTVs, which are also being built by Lockheed Martin and Armor Holdings, have diesel-electric hybrid engines and can export power to other machinery, and have gear including infrared and video cameras, according to the Army News Service.
